This project is well-suited for the budding creative and a lovely opportunity to incorporate learning more about Matariki ✨
Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars (also known as the Pleiades) that appear in the night sky and signify the start of the Māori New Year.
During Matariki, whānau come together to share food, remember those who have passed, celebrate life and look towards the future.
What you will need for this project
- Oil Pastels
- Indian Ink or Black Acrylic Paint
- Brush
- A thick paper (I used Clairefontaine Paint On Mixed Media 250GSM Paper)
- Masking Tape
- Something to scratch the Indian Ink or Acrylic Paint away with I used kebab sticks
Step One:
Step One: I place the masking tape down around the edges of my paper. This will keep it in one place, save the Indian Ink/Black Paint from going everywhere and keep the edges crisp.
Then I apply a thick layer of Oil Pastels down covering up all of the white paper. Feel free to experiment with different patterns and ways to colour in the paper.
Step Two:
Step Two: Using your Indian Ink or Black Acrylic Paint cover up all of the pastels so that you can no longer see the colour.
Set it aside to allow the ink/paint to dry out completely (this step is very important and will allow you to make clean and easier marks).
Step Three
Step Three: With your scratching tool scratch away at the Indian Ink/Black Paint to reveal the colours underneath
Experiment with different scratching tools and patterns to achieve various effects.
Carefully remove the masking tape from your picture and you would have created your own bright night sky 🌌
